Ski School
7 Jan 2010 | 10:26 am
Skies are a Norwegian form of transportation and recreational gear dating back to the Viking ages. The Ski School winter adventure is suitable for absolute beginners. Our guides will teach you the essential techniques of cross-country skiing. This includes how to slide down small hills, make turns, slow down, instant stops, etc. The purpose of the ski school is to give you a basic introduction to cross-country skiing, and most of all; to have great fun on skies. You will be making your own ski tracks in the snow, or ski along snowmobile or dog sled tracks. Falling in the snow is impossible to avoid while testing your new skills. But do not worry: Stumbling in soft snow does not hurt, but is often humorous. The adventure includes a hot meal in our wilderness camp.

Tip:
Did you know that April is the most common winter month for outdoors activities in northern Norway? April is the time when the locals do most of their outdoor winter activities. During April the daylight above the arctic circle is rapidly extending until there is 24 hours of light (no night darkness). The higher Sun and lighted nights gives milder winter temperatures. At the same time the snow depth is often at its maximum in April, the peak of the winter. This combination gives the best conditions for many kinds of winter excursions. We of course provide winter adventures in April (except northern lights sightings). Try out winter adventures with extreme daylight and comfortable temperatures. It is a very charming experience.
Tip:
Did you know that in our area you can not see the Sun from middle of November until the end of January? In the middle of this period, the Sun is below the horizon 24 hours, even at its peak. The dark period is a phenomenon found only north of the northern arctic circle, and south of the southern arctic circle. This does not mean that it is complete darkness. The short day holds a misty daylight, not unlike what one might experience just before sunrise or after sunset (twilight). This misty light in combination with the dramatic white landscape provides a magical atmosphere. The areas with dark time during the winter have a similar period of midnight Sun in the summer, when the Sun stays above the horizon 24 hours.

Winter Fjord Fishing
7 Jan 2010 | 10:26 am
This is the real thing! The winter fjord fishing adventure will give you the opportunity to join a genuine fjord fisherman in his fishing boat on an arctic fjord. You will see different kinds of fish species, and learn how they are caught and preserved for delivery. The fjord is surrounded by thousand meter high mountains, the Lyngen Alps, falling vertically in to the deep arctic water that holds these great fish resources. The spectacular surroundings also give you a chance to spot sea eagles or other arctic ocean birds. Do not forget to bring your camera! The boat is a modern speed fishing boat equipped with toilet, inside dining space and a large life raft for you safety. You will also be comfortable outside on deck, wearing insulated regatta suites. Out on the fjord you will be served a hot meal.
We pick you up on our bus or minibus in the town centre of Tromsø, by the hotel Rica. The town centre is very compact, so you will easily find the pick up point. We then transport you a 90 minute drive to the harbour in Storfjord (in English the name is “Grand fjord”). From the harbour the fjord winter fishing will last approximately 4 hours.

8 Days Program
26 Sep 2009 | 11:09 pm
Our winter programs have a wide variation in excursions and experiences. The 8 days program includes dog sledding, reindeer sledding and snowmobile safari. You will also sleep two nights in Camp Tamok out in the wilderness, in a heated lavvo (big Sami tent), or in a rough timber cabin if you prefer. There you will get an introduction to snowshoeing, Sami culture, and general camp life. The dry climate in the area where our camp is located gives you the best of opportunities to experience the northern lights. We provide local Norwegian or Sami food for you to test, and a wood fired sauna and bath tub out in the wilderness if you want to try. Check the details in the program below.
The best from both worlds: The whole time we provide you the same nice hotel room in the town centre of Tromsø as your base. You only have to unpack once, and all the time you have an urban retreat between the excursions. You get the comfort of the (4 star) hotel, restaurants, sightings and shopping opportunities in the arctic capital, and the thrill from adventures in the surrounding wilderness. We provide all outer clothing you need for the excursions, and we provide the transports between the hotel and the wilderness.

Several daily flights |
Flight tip for UK guests: This program fits perfectly to the direct flights between Gatwick in London and Tromsø Airport, Tuesday to Tuesday, or Saturday to Saturday.
Day 1:
You arrive in Tromsø, probably by plane to Tromsø Airport. The airport is located only a 10 minutes drive from the town centre. We have booked you in to one of the best hotels in the centre of town, the Radisson Blu. The hotel is recently rehabilitated and expanded, and holds only quality rooms. It has a credited restaurant and several other facilities (spa, gym etc). Notice that the package price includes sharing double rooms. If you or someone in your group wants single rooms, ask the receptionist for upgrading solutions.
Day 2:
On first half of the day you have the opportunity to get to know the town. Maybe you need to shop some warm underwear for the excursions, or do other preparations. Check out below our tips for winter vacations in arctic Norway. At 17.00 we pick you up in our minibus or bus from our standard pick-up point by the Rica hotel, a hotel right beside yours. It is easy to locate in the very compact town centre. We then transport you approximately a 75 minutes drive out in the wilderness, to an uninhabited area. Here we welcome you to Camp Tamok, our wilderness camp that is the starting end ending point for excursions out in the wilderness. The camp consists of a rough timber cabin, several big lavvos (Sami tents), a sauna, hot tub, and wardrobe and toilet facilities separate for men and women. In the wilderness camp there is no plumbing or electricity.
This evening and night you will stay in the camp, acclimate, and get introduced to the camp life. Enjoy the open fire in the tent, a hot meal and coffee or tea. In the period of November-March, you have the opportunity to experience the Northern lights. If there is no Aurora to find in the polar sky, we have other experiences ready.
You will learn how to use snowshoes and venture into the white landscape. Our skilled guides will teach you how to build snow caves, or how to build a fire in wintertime and prepare a hot meal under the open sky. The night you spend sleeping by the open fire in the Sami tent, or in the wood stove heated cabin if you prefer.
Day 3:
Wake up to breakfast in the wild. Get ready for testing the elements the modern way; a snowmobile safari through the valley of Finn, to the lake of Tamok. A distance of 30 km one way. At the lake you can try ice-fishing. You get a thorough instruction before starting up. Due to the dramatic topography a reduced speed is held during parts of the tour, but on flat land and frozen lakes you can speed up. A hot meal will be served during the excursion. You will be driving in pairs, one driver and one passenger, with opportunity to switch places half way. The journey ends back in the camp, and at 14.45 we transport you to your hotel in Tromsø. Find a nice restaurant or spend the night at the hotel, recharging you batteries.
Day 4:
At 09.00 (a.m.) we pick you up and drive you out to Camp Tamok. You now have many hours ahead of you in the wilderness, and it starts with a Sami experience. Reindeer sledding is the oldest form of transport in the north, and an ancient part of Sami culture. You will be driving in pairs, with one sledge for each reindeer. The trip is approximately 2,5 km long, going across the valley of Tamok. The adventure includes trying out lasso-throwing, visiting a Sami family lavvo, and learning about Sami culture and history with an introduction to traditional Sami handicraft.
Dinner will be served in the Sami tent in Camp Tamok, and after dinner you are in for a treat. We have now prepared our outdoor sauna and a hot tub, suitable for up to 20 guests, both heated with wood stoves. In the cold winter in the wilderness there is no place better to be than in an outside hot tub. There are heated wardrobe facilities, separate for men and women. For your privacy we divide guests in to smaller groups of friends/families, for use of the facilities separately.
Using the bath tub or sauna is of course optional. You may choose to instead spend your time in one of our big lavvos (Sami tents) for social gathering around the open fire. And you can do an evening walk with head lamp in the magic polar night. Enjoy the comfort and contrasts of our outdoor facilities. Again you will spend your night in the lavvo by the open fire, or in the timber cabin.
Day 5:
Our guides that have spent the night together with you wake you up and serve you breakfast before the adventure continues. Say hello to a bunch of barking huskies that are hungry for action (but still friendly as lambs). The dog sledding excursion starts with learning how to train and groom dogs. You will get detailed instructions in how to be a musher – how to drive a dog sledding team. Then you drive the dog sled into the white landscapes, through the valley of Vass. A total distance of 16 km. The area is wild and totally uninhabited, and the speed of the dogs will impress you. We will be driving in pairs, one driver and one passenger per sled, with opportunity to switch places half way. The excursion ends in Camp Tamok, and at 14.45 we transport you back to your hotel. After more than 30 hours in the wild arctic environment you will have your best warm shower ever. Relax, and ask the hotel management about restaurant recommendations.
Day 6 and 7:
Being in the Arctic capital Tromsø is an adventure in it self. You now have two full days to spend in the town, and a lot to investigate. No visit to Tromsø is complete without going a trip with the Cable car, from sea level and up more than 400 meter. We also recommend the big aquarium Polaria, where you get an introduction to the arctic ocean. Visit the Polar museum or Tromsø museum, where you can learn about the polar expeditions and history of the arctic area. The tourist information office, right beside your hotel, can give you a lot of other recommendations. Choose you dinners from the many restaurants in the town centre where you can enjoy anything from sushi to traditional Norwegian dishes.
Day 8:
It is time to say goodbye to Tromsø. Maybe you have an early flight home, or maybe you are going on a winter cruise up to the North Cape? Lyngsfjord Adventure thank you for visiting us and welcome you back in the summer to experience the midnight sun, fjord safari, sea fishing, canoeing, glacier wandering and many other adventures.

- From February you need sunglasses to protect your eyes from the reflection of the snow.
